Brazil’s Solar Outlook: From Resource Advantage to Policy Momentum, Clean Energy Enters a Golden Era
As one of Latin America’s largest economies, Brazil enjoys exceptional solar resources. With long sunshine hours and strong radiation year-round, the country has laid a solid foundation for large-scale solar development. Solar power is becoming an increasingly vital driver of Brazil’s energy transition.
Rapid Growth: Now the World’s Third-Largest Solar Market
Fueled by both abundant resources and rising demand, Brazil’s solar sector has grown rapidly. By 2023, total installed capacity reached 16.9 GW, with $17.2 billion invested —56% of all new clean energy investment in Latin America. Clean energy already accounts for 87% of Brazil’s power mix, with solar contributing 21% and wind 12%. This achievement placed Brazil as the world’s third-largest solar market, behind only China and the U.S.
Policy Boost for Distributed Solar
Brazil’s solar boom is closely tied to policy support, particularly the Net Metering scheme regulated by ANEEL. It allows households and businesses to feed excess solar power into the grid for bill credits, cutting electricity costs and shortening payback periods. Systems up to 5 MW can continue enjoying these benefits until 2045.
Because of these incentives, distributed solar is thriving, especially in São Paulo and Minas Gerais. In 2023, 2.7 GW of new capacity was added, backed by $1.68 billion in investment. Residential and commercial systems dominate the market, with commercial installations growing steadily.
